This neighborhood was pro-active, and look what they accomplished!

Flood waters after Katrina...

Before cleanup ...

During cleanup ...

After cleanup!!

WOW!

We can either live with it, or do something about it!

According to the book "Broken Windows" (by author George Kelling), if neighborhood decay and disorder, such as broken windows, graffiti, and litter, are left unattended, the result will be an increase in serious criminal activity. These factors create a sense of irreversible decline that leads people to abandon the community or to stay away. If we "clean up" minor disorder, a reduction in crime will follow and the sense of security in the community will increase.

Citywide Involvement & Awareness...

Sign Purchase: Katrina Krewe has purchased 300 official "No Dumping/Littering" aluminum city signs which have been installed by the City's Sanitation Department in targeted areas around town. A recent ordinance was passed upping the fine to $1000 for offenders.

Advertising:
Katrina Krewe is running "Keep it Klean" billboards, RTA Bus and Streetcar signs, and television and radio public service announcements.

Sign Removal: City Ordinance 66-284 states it is illegal for anyone to place "vertical litter" (ie. corregated signs) on neutral grounds, posts or public spaces (other than those placed by the city). It is lawful for you to remove all "non-city" signs on "public" property at your own discretion. Yard signs may only be posted on "private" property. See http://www.causs.org.

Drain Clearing Awareness: Residents and Business owners, please maintain your curbsides, and clear trash away from the drains to allow rain water to flow properly!

Mowing Public Spaces: Parks and Parkways could use help maintaining public green spaces through out the city. To help, please contact Anne McDonald at 658-2176 or email aemacdonald@cityofno.com

*See more important contact info at the Contact link.

Businesses...

Distribution: Katrina Krewe volunteers have presented local businesses with a "Keep it Klean" spiel, calendar, and a maintenance check off list. See some of the participating business on the list below.

Speak Out: Let businesses you frequent know that how they upkeep their property's exterior is a direct reflection of how they run their business. Good stores and important businesses will not locate in a community that lacks the pride to effectively control litter. Regular maintenance is key!

Construction Workers/Debris Companies...

Preventive:
Cover and secure any vehicle, truck or trailer carrying a load. Keep storage bins and dumpsters near loading areas to reduce debris from scattering. Supervisors, please keep a box of bags in all work trucks and have your employees utilize them on job sites.

Neighborhoods...

Suggestions for planning your own clean up:
Make your contacts, plan a date, time, and meeting spot.. tell everyone to wear a pair of gloves, bring heavy duty contractor bags, a rake, broom or shovel, a bottle of water (and hand wipes). Please see guidelines on the volunteer page for bagging/sorting.  Call the Sanitation Department at 658-3800 to schedule a pick up. See pics (at bottom) of a pro-active Fountainbleu neighborhood!

Spreading the word: Katrina Krewe has spawned many clean up efforts throughout the city. We distributed a large number of supplies amongst locally organized neighborhood groups, and continue to post their efforts at the volunteer page. If you would like to post your efforts, please let us know. Please reference this list to join YOUR Neighborhood Group.
(See volunteer page for more opportunities.)

Other ways to keep your neighborhood clean: Securely cover trash containers to prevent wind or animals from spreading litter. Bring a bag when you walk the dog and pick up litter along the way.

Students/Teachers/Schools...

Adopt: Many schools have adopted an area around their school long term, and have allocated a regular time to pick up.

Litter Awareness Program: The Katrina Krewe is entering local schools with a "Keep it Klean" litter awareness program. The program includes an anti litter skit called "Kids Against Trash", which is performed by local actors, and the introduction of "litter awareness week" with lots of fun activities for school implementation. See Schools link for more details. Please contact us if your school would like to participate in our program.

Universities/Sororities/Fraternities...

Service:
Please adopt the area around your greek organization and allocate a regular time to pick up.  Please assign "trash captains" daily to be in charge of clean up maintenance. Assign community service clean up projects and give credit for attendance.

Parents...

Example: Throw a bag in your back pocket and take a walk with your kids encouraging them to pick up along the way. Keep a box of bags in your trunk to utilize at the park or on the field. Set a good example. Teach your children to make the right choice!

Concerned Citizens...

Report:
Littering is against the law. If you see someone litter from their car, write down their license plate number and
report them at 658-3800 (they can receive a citation requiring them to show up in court, which becomes a hassle making them less likely to litter again in the future.) Do the same when you see anyone illegally dumping (get the name or address of the company or person(s)) and report them. Of course, in any situation when you can get a picture or video of someone in action, they can surely receive a fine.

Section 66-287: The owner, his agent or occupant, of all premises shall be responsible to take up or cause to be taken up all aggregate sweeping of garbage, trash, litter, grass cuttings, leaves and other waste materials from the premises, sidewalks and abutting property, including the space beyond the curb line in front, extending 1-1/2 feet from the curb line into the street or roadway and in the rear and along side thereof such premises owned or occupied so that such sweepings shall not under any circumstances reach the drains, gutters, streets or roadways. The owner, his agent, or occupant shall be responsible to have all sweepings placed into containers sufficient to prevent such sweeping from being scattered by the wind and placed out on the days designated for collection.

Past Projects...

Doorhanger Distribution: Many volunteers distributed thousands of door hangers thru out New Orleans, which contained pertinent debris removal information and Katrina Krewe info.

Mardi Gras Projects:

In 2006 we...
1) Assigned volunteers to maintain trash receptacles along the Uptown parade route,

2) Partnered with Glad and Eli Manning for a French Quarter clean up and party at N.O. Original Daiquiris.
2) Assigned volunteers to Glad distribution tables, and to ride in a Glad truck during 3 parades, to distribute Glad bags encouraging
the crowd to utilize them during and after the parades,
3) Massive post Mardi Gras parade route clean up with 800 people in attendance.

Over Mardi Gras 2007 we partnered with Glad, Keep America Beautiful, the New Orleans Sheriff's office and the N.O. Sanitation dept. to clean and beautify (with plantings), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Yard Signs: Along with the City signs mentioned at top, we have also distributed
"Keep it Klean" yard signs to businesses and residents to place on their property.

Trash Bash: Fundraiser held at Chris Carbine Motorcars, with 700 people in attendance, 4 local bands: Bag of Donuts, Paul Soniat, Some Like it Hot, and Rockin' Dopsie and plenty of New Orleans Food and Drinks. See "Contributors".

Supply Distribution: Donated a large number of supplies to organized Neighborhood groups who continue to form clean ups of their own.

Business Distribution: Distributed laminated clean up check off lists and calendars to 1000 local businesses for their employees to utilize in daily maintenance.

Network: Encouraged, facilitated and coordinated many neighborhood groups, churches, schools, businesses, and individuals to get involved. See "Testimonials".

Spread the Word: Thru our website, and the tremendous support of the Media, we continue to attract thousands of tourists to New Orleans to join in our efforts. See "Press".

Clean Ups: Katrina Krewe maintained twice a week clean ups from November 2005 to May 2006 (when we then shifted to once a month clean ups.)   Post Katrina
we have removed over 250,000 tons of trash and debris from the streets of New Orleans. See "Photos/Clean ups".

School Prep: In conjunction with the Glad products company, Katrina Krewe cleaned and landscaped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School in the Lower 9th Ward over Mardi Gras 2007.

We can either live with it, or do something about it!! STAY PRO-ACTIVE!!!
