Anti-Litter Program for Kids...

Katrina Krewe launched our anti-litter program, "Kids Against Trash", in 2006, to teach children in local schools how they can contribute to a cleaner New Orleans. The program has targeted over 10,700 children thus far. It consists of a brief introduction, the viewing of this great PSA featuring Deuce McAlister of the New Orleans Saints, Chef Emeril Lagasse, and other local favorites, and the performance of a comedic anti-litter skit by local actors. The actors deem the children the "K.A.T. Krewe" (Kids Against Trash Krewe) and swear them in via this anti litter pledge:

New Orleans is our home.
I promise to throw my trash away, and Keep it Klean every day,

I will respect the water and the land, and protect it with my own two hands,

Young or old we need to care, because New Orleans is our home to share.

Last year the children received
"Keep it Klean" t-shirts, bumper stickers, and car litter bags. This school year brings sponsorship by the New Orleans Saints, and a new slogan "Be a Saint, Keep it Klean", which now appears on all children's items.

In keeping with the "Kids Against Trash" program, we ask that all teachers utilize the multitude of fun activities and 'litter'ature below to implement your schools "Litter Awareness Week". In addition, we also ask that you incorporate the following long term litter control concepts into your class curriculum year around.

Show your children this great
Public Service Announcement to remind them how, and where, New Orleanians are "Keeping it Klean".

Ideas and Activities for Litter Awareness Week...

Anti-Litter Pledge - Teach the children the anti litter pledge (above) and have them recite it once a week.

Trash Can - Have the children bring a small bedroom trash can (or school may provide) that the children can decorate for their bedroom, thus encouraging them to use it more often. Or have each class decorate a big can at school. Ideas: glue New Orleans print media to can, ie. Times Pic, Gambit etc..  then add feathers, beads, jewels or fleur de lis symbols.

Poster Contest - Have a school poster contest designing the best slogan or artwork (see ideas, more) to remind others not to litter. When you have your winner, contact us and we will deliver a Katrina Krewe cap to the student with a $25 gift certificate to Toys R Us (Katrina Krewe will provide awards only for schools participating in our anti litter skit..all other schools should award their students independantly).

Litter Essay Contest - Have a schoolwide anti litter/awareness essay contest. When you have your winner, contact us and we will deliver a Katrina Krewe cap to the student with a $25 gift certificate to Toys R Us (Katrina Krewe will provide awards only for schools participating in our anti litter skit..all other schools should award their students independantly).

Team Game Day - Do each task below then tag the next team member to do the same.
Trash Toss - use balled up paper for tossing, team who gets most in the trash can wins
Dust Pan Carry - similar to egg on a spoon, put an old soda can on a dust pan and race
3 Legged Pick Up - pair off & tie 2 inside legs together, pick up dispersed trash & toss in can at the finish Recyclable? - recycled & regular cans, team must put trash in correct cans, most correct in fastest time wins
Broom Spin - hold broomstick to forehead & spin in 3 circles w/brush end sweeping wide circle on floor
Trash Can Obstacle Course - stagger trash cans, kids weave thru cans as they run the course
Musical Cans - turn class trash cans upside down & use as musical chairs
Wheelbarrow Race - one student in wheelbarrow while others push wheelbarrow to finish line

See it, Snag it, Bag it or Slam Dunk Your Junk - Teach your students these catch phrases, while also explaining how to pick up trash safely (ie. if you see glass tell your parent or guardian). Also share the importance of cleaning their hands after they clean up their city.

Pictures - Show these before and after pictures to your students (and the pictures of children cleaning up). Have a class discussion on how the before/after pictures make them feel, and discuss ways to prevent litter. Have them draw two pictures of their home or school, then add litter to one of them and discuss how they would prefer their home or school to look.

Daily PA Announcements - Read different litter-facts over the morning announcements during litter awareness week. Visit different sites on this page to choose your information.

Fun Snack - At the end of Litter Awareness Week, reward the children by letting them get a little dirty making (and eating) yummy mud pie: add layers of crumbled oreos and chocolate pudding in a cup, throw in some gummy worms and enjoy! Oh, and remind them to clean up when they are done! What a mess!

Long Term Litter Control Concepts...

Clean Up -  Adopt the area around your school and allocate a regular time to pick up. Assign an area to each grade level and give monthly awards to the class whose area stays cleanest. Older students earn service hours.

Trash Captain - Assign a student daily (or weekly) who is responsible for keeping the classroom and campus clean. This person could have the privelege of wearing their "Keep it Klean" t-shirt on a day when they are captain.

Stop, Drop and Clean! - Choose one lunch period weekly when students could "stop, drop and clean!". A lot can be accomplished in just 10 minutes if everyone is working together.

Clean Club - K.A.T. Club (Kids Against Trash Club) could meet to brainstorm ideas for keeping the school clean and could be responsible for "catching" their peers cleaning up.

Catch Kids - Small rewards could be given to students who are caught in the act of cleaning up at school.

Kids Hot Spots - Suggest they pick up after school as well: at the park, on the field or in the dug out, at the movies, and in their homes. Tell them to ask their parents to take a walk with them to pick up in their neighborhoods. Kids can also set good examples for their parents!

L.A.W. (aka. Litter Awareness Watch) - Let the children know that littering is against the law, and there is a $1000 fine for offenders. Print out the attached flyer with littering contacts and tell them to keep it in their parents car. They can act as "litter police" and help to report anyone they see violating the litter law.

Teach your children to make the right choices and take pride in their city!  Refer to the below information to educate them on litter and its consequences.

"So as I walked my daughter to our car after school at Country Day on Friday, she suddenly hollered, "LITTER!! I have to put it somewhere!" and off she went, picking up bits of trash and putting them in the can. It all became clear to me when I found the Katrina Krewe T-shirt in her backpack. To whoever made the presentation, good work!"

Katrina Krewe's work and dedication to our city is admirable and we will certainly do what we can to help."

The program is fabulous, and the other moms also said their kids are excited about it. Kudos to the Katrina Krewe for getting it together, because it's a terrific thing. My kids are now picking up trash everywhere we go, and they hung the car litter bag on my steering wheel and they really use it."

9/20/06

9/19/06

9/13/06
"My neighbor's son goes to Holy Name and she told me how much he enjoyed the Keep it Klean skit at school.  A bag of garbage broke yesterday and the garbage men just left it behind.  When he got home from school, he put on his "Keep it Klean" t-shirt and picked up all the garbage in the street." KK SIDENOTE: this also reminds us not to pack our garbage bags so heavy that they might bust, making it difficult for the garbage men to do their jobs.

9/13/06
"I am SO excited after having just seen your Kat Krewe web page about getting the kids at school involved in the anti-litter campaign. The information on the site is fantastic - thanks for all the links to other environmental web sites for kids. I would LOVE to get my kids involved in Kat Krewe. I think bringing your skit to schools is a great way to re-emphasize how important it is to keep our environment clean and safe."

9/13/06
"I was at Carrollton soccer this week and saw 2 kids with their shirts on and a mom told me Katrina Krewe was at Holy Name and the kids loved it.  AWESOME!!"

My little one is in Pre K at Holy Name and LOVED what you all did the other day.  He now sees the Keep it Klean signs around town and gets so excited."
